Of course, one broad context is the Enlightenment, so, you know, the so-called Age of Reason,

where a tradition, hierarchy,

was being called into question. Now, there's been a lot of revisionist historiography on the

on the Enlightenment as well. So an older view is that it was largely non or even anti-religious.

There were those elements to be sure, but there was also

a religious enlightenment, so a Catholic, Protestant, Jewish enlightenment. So it's much broader
