0:09.2	how children develop racial prejudice and how to prevent it.

0:20.4	What satisfy some curiosity? Children need to be taught a lot of things to make it in the world.
0:26.0	I mean, nobody comes out of the womb knowing how to tie their shoes, right?
0:30.0	So it might be natural to assume that if you don't teach kids bad things like racial prejudice and discrimination, they won't be a problem.
0:38.0	Unfortunately, the evidence says no.
0:41.0	Research has shown that children will develop racial prejudice unless their parents
0:46.6	teach them otherwise.
0:48.4	But those lessons are probably easier than you think.
0:52.4	Decades of research have shown that children learn racial differences and even hold racial
0:56.6	stereotypes at a much younger age than you might expect.
1:00.4	Babies as young as three months old not only distinguished faces on the basis of race,
1:06.0	but they also show a preference for faces of their own race.
1:10.0	And one study found that at age three, white children given a choice of potential playmates preferred those of their same race.
1:17.0	This was regardless of their parents' racial beliefs.
1:21.0	The influences come from everywhere, stereotypes in media, lack of
1:25.8	diversity in schools and neighborhoods, and the attitudes of the other people in
1:29.8	children's lives. So how can parents reverse this trend? Well for a start parents have to talk with
