I'm your host, Anna Garcia. Our case this

week, a prank goes fatally wrong, but a community finds justice through compassion. It started

innocently enough with a few teens rolling the house of a beloved mentor. However, it ended in

tragedy when the teacher ran to greet the teens, but slipped and fell.

The teacher was fatally hit by a vehicle all in the space of a few feet, leaving a wife without

her husband, two children, without their father and a community brokenhearted. But as the case made

national headlines, it begged the question, what would justice

look like in this situation? Initially, police responded by arresting the teens, charging one with a

felony. However, the wife of the victim pleaded with prosecutors to drop the charges against the

teens. Despite grieving the loss of her husband, the widow met the situation

with grace and with mercy. She reasoned that charging the teens over an accident would be

counterproductive to her husband's mission. While his life could not be given back,

his death could be treated in a way that would honor his life's work.

Ultimately, prosecutors listened to the victim's family and dropped all the charges

against the teens, deeming the incident a terrible accident. We recorded this episode hours

before the district attorney announced the dismissal of all the charges. But we wanted to share

our conversation with you to start a dialogue about alternative forms of justice and emphasizing
