Summary

How does understanding ancient, Jewish prayer transform the way we approach our own prayer life? In this thought-provoking discussion, the Voxology Podcast unpacks the profound communal and theological practices of Jewish prayer that shaped the teachings of Jesus and continue to challenge modern, individualistic approaches to Christianity. Join the hosts as they explore how prayer reflects our understanding of God, our faith, and the world around us, offering a deeper lens into themes of cruciformity, justice, and the role of the church in society.

By examining the historical context of Jewish prayer practices, such as the Shema and the Amidah, the conversation dives into the rhythms of blessing, repentance, and trust that were central to the lives of early believers. Learn how these practices offer fresh insight into the Lord’s Prayer and reshape how we navigate faith and cultural challenges today. Whether it's reimagining what it means to bless God or understanding prayer as a communal act of justice and restoration, this episode invites listeners into a richer theology of prayer that connects deeply with the teachings of Jesus.

How does prayer influence your faith perspective? We encourage and would love discussion as we pursue these topics together. Feel free to email your thoughts, engage the conversation on Facebook and Instagram, and join us in exploring the intersection of faith, justice, and cultural engagement. Let’s continue walking this road together.

Hey, everybody. Welcome to Voxology podcast by Keri Tim Stafford. We are here. And I got to tell you, we had quite the week this week. We record this on a Friday. You get it on a Monday. But last, let's see,

0:23.7

this time last week when we're recording. So last Thursday, Friday, Saturday, we were hosting 30

0:30.1

of the Bravest Souls in the Voxology community for our non-conference 2025 in Brentwood, Tennessee.

0:39.0

And we were, for the first time, this is our third one.

0:42.6

First two dealt with folks that were in sort of ministry, vocational ministry type positions.

0:48.6

This one was the first one where that wasn't a requirement.

0:51.9

And this was for anybody who had dealt with church trauma, church hurt, church disillusionment.

0:57.5

And we never know how those things are going to go.

1:00.3

We try to keep the groups small.

1:02.7

So we've had two groups of about 20, and this was a group of almost 30.

1:06.7

And the reason we do that is because we do a lot of processing, tons of processing around

1:13.7

some of the stories that people were carrying into the kind of weekend with them.

1:22.3

Our goals were to have people feel validated in the idea that it's not us.

1:32.0

It's like we're not alone in this, I should say.

1:36.1

It's not the church is legitimately at times hurting people.

1:41.4

It's not just in our brains or lack of faith or something like that. So validation

1:45.5

was one goal, exploration where we were exploring the story and bearing kind of eyewitness,

1:50.7

sympathetic eyewitnesses to each other's story. And then we wanted to imagine perhaps what

1:58.9

steps towards healing and restoration might look like.

2:01.3

And that healing and restoration doesn't mean getting back into church or trusting the next

2:05.6

spiritual leader you get into contact with.

2:07.6

But that gives you just an overview.
