It might or it might not surprise you to know that I was shy and self-conscious for most

0:41.9

of my life. I felt very awkward around people I didn't know. And I never developed that skill of

0:48.4

small talk, making me pretty awkward and useless at any kind of social gathering.

With it, I felt emboldened to approach people,

1:21.5

often strangers, and just strike up a conversation. Sometimes I wanted to make their photograph,

1:26.9

but other times I was just curious about something about them, a cold jacket they were wearing,

1:29.5

or some activity they were involved in.

1:38.1

I think the presence of the camera allowed the focus to be more on them, rather than me and my wealth of insecurities. The camera opened the door to glimpse other people's lives and their stories.

He used the camera to immerse himself in a culture that fascinated him as a boy and a young man.

2:04.6

His new book, an exhibition, Mississippi Dream, is a visual exploration of one of the most

2:10.7

quintessential locations in the American South. And I hope that this conversation inspires you to think

2:16.1

about what doors your camera could open for you and what stories you're meant to tell.

2:23.8
