I was asked recently to speak on the subject of Kodak's Shirley Calibration Cards.

A Shirley card was a reference card used by lab technicians producing prints for primarily negative film. The first of these cards used an image of a Kodak employee named Shirley, whose white skin tone was used as an aid to deliver color-acc

accurate prints for Kodak customers. Though different women posed for these cards over the decades, the name surely stuck.

So film and its processing and the resulting prints were optimized for white skin tones.

The results for people with brown or black skin, while they weren't always accurate or flattering.
