Summary

Duane Michals (b. 1932, McKeesport, PA) is one of the great photographic innovators of the last century, widely known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text. Michals first made significant, creative strides in the field of photography during the 1960s. In an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals manipulated the medium to communicate narratives. The sequences, for which he is widely known, appropriate cinema’s frame-by-frame format. Michals has also incorporated text as a key component in his works. Rather than serving a didactic or explanatory function, his handwritten text adds another dimension to the images’ meaning and gives voice to Michals’s singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous, often all at once.   Websites Duane Michals - DC Moore Gallery Duane Michals - ArtNet Sarah Moon   Education Resources: Tokyo: Exploration of the Metropolis 2.0 Momenta Photographic Workshops   Candid Frame Resources Making Photographs: Developing a Personal Visual Workflow Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. Finding one's own voice in photography isn't just about technique or style.

0:14.4

Technique and style are easily duplicated, resulting in countless photographers who seem to

0:20.1

produce the same kind of work as others.

0:22.6

You don't have to look any further than Instagram for proof of that.

0:26.6

However, there are photographers whose uniqueness comes from how they both see and experience the world.

0:34.6

When they embrace that personal and genuine approach, they create bodies of work

0:39.4

unlike most others. Dwayne Michaels is one such photographer who for decades has created work

0:46.6

that challenges ideas of what photography can and should be. His early work moved beyond the

singular image and became the product of a visual poet and a storyteller. His early work moved beyond the singular image and became the product of a visual poet

and a storyteller. His examinations of mortality and sexuality have been born not from what he

1:02.6

thinks about, but how he thinks about them. As you'll hear, Dwayne Michaels is a unique voice,

1:09.1

whether you're looking at his photographs or hearing him speak.

This is Ibody and X, and welcome back to The Candid Frame.

1:20.6

So, Dwayne, welcome to the Candid Frame. It's a pleasure to have you.

1:24.6

I love being had.

1:26.9

I've been a long admirer of your work, but you probably hear that a lot.

1:30.2

Nevertheless, it's true.

1:32.0

Well, thank you.

1:32.8

One of the things that struck me is very interesting about your work is I heard you say

1:38.2

once that much of your work is sort of inspired either by what makes you afraid or what makes you angry.

1:45.4

And was that something that you were sort of aware of from your early days as making

1:51.8

photographs?
