Summary

Jamel Shabazz has been documenting the ‘Urban Life’ for over 30 years. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY he picked up his first camera at the age of 15 and proceeded to record the world around him. Jamel has drawn inspiration from the great James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks, Robert Capa, Chester Higgins and Eli Reed. He is the author of 3 monographs, ‘Back in the Days’, ‘The Last Sunday in June’ and ‘A Time Before Crack, Jamel is presently working on his fourth book, entitled ‘The 90’s'. Jamel is dedicated to mentoring youth, both in the field of photography and career planning. Shabazz is a volunteer with the Rush Arts Philanthroicp Foundation, which is an organization that is geared toward exposing inner city youth to the arts. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cheryl Dunn, the director of Everybody Street, a wonderful documentary about New York Street photography. If you haven't seen it yet, it should be on your

photographers profiled in the film. Jamel Shabazz has been documenting his

community in Brooklyn and elsewhere since the 70s, and he's produced the quintessential document

of life in New York City, as well as the birth and growth of hip-pop culture. He has published

several books, including his first, The iconic Back in the Day. As you'll hear,

he is a passionate photographer, and his images are far more than just about music and fashion.

Introduced to photography by his father, we started our conversation talking about those

early influences, and one photo book in particular that changed his life.

Yes, first of all, I was very fortunate to have a father who was a photographer. He had spent

eight years in the Navy and at the age of 17, he picked up the camera while in there,

and the Navy trained him, actually.

So he was professional, and he took craft very serious.
