When we as photographers get beyond the technical and move past obsessing about shutter speed, aperture, and pixel count, we started thinking about vision, concept, and ideas.

And in my opinion, those best at doing that are people who are brave enough to take their own lives, their own experiences and passions to create exceptional work.

Ryan Muirhead is one of those photographers for me, and he's not only produced intimate and

powerful images, but he's also done so with a generous authenticity that's rare, but that

I greatly appreciate.

I began our conversation by asking Ryan his thoughts on a quote by Tracy Matlock

that Ryan posted on his blog, which reads, I've heard that you can recognize a photographer

by how they continually compose the edges of their frame, that each quarter-second decision

to exclude, to define a boundary, to say what will not be in the photograph,

is as explicit as a thumbprint.

Wow, that's such a fantastic and interesting question.

And I remember when I saw that quote, it really impacted me.
