Summary

NEW PODCAST: In a brand new 6-part series, Ian and Dorian explore the histories of the most misrepresented ideas in politics. Here’s a taster of the first episode: McCarthyism. Was it really a crusade against communists or just a grifter’s opportunity that got out of hand? How did a witch-hunt morph into a way to denounce any critic, no matter who? And did Joe McCarthy really write the rulebook for Trumpism? It’s a new smash hit from the House of OGWN! Hello, I'm Dorian Linsky. And I'm Ian Dunnell. We're here to tell you about a brand new

0:14.0

podcast that we're making with the producers of Ogod What Now and the Bunker.

0:17.6

It's called Origin Story and it's out every Monday. Each week we're going to be exploring

0:22.2

the hidden roots of some of the most used, abused and misunderstood ideas in politics.

0:27.4

Some conspiracy theory to woke to centrism. We're going to look into the secret history

0:31.6

of these concepts and explain why it matters where people get them wrong.

0:35.2

The first edition is about McCarthyism and it's out right now. You can find it in your

0:39.4

favourite podcast app, just search Origin Story. To wet your appetite, here's a

0:44.1

taster of episode one, McCarthyism. Ian, why have we decided to not just talk about McCarthyism,

0:56.4

but to start with McCarthyism. What is it about the way that word is being used?

1:01.9

I see it misused on right and left in roughly equal capacity. On pretty much a weekly basis,

1:10.0

we're going to pick some words for this series that it's a daily hourly basis. It's not

1:14.6

quite that bad, but McCarthyism I'd say is misused on a weekly basis. The most obvious examples

1:19.6

right now, Alex Jones, that lunatic conspiracy theory in the US. His response to being called in

1:27.6

front of the January 6th committee was instantly to go there. He said it's a witch hunt,

1:32.8

which has lied about myself. It's a criminal subpoena. This is something that Joseph McCarthy

1:37.2

did to a lot of people in America, although he added the essential ending to that. It turned out

1:41.9

some of the people he was targeting are actually guilty. You even got that one wrong, Alex.

1:47.7

Congratulations. I see it in members of the Lane Party who have been accused of anti-Semitism,

1:56.0

they complain about McCarthyism. People being called up to January 6th committee,

1:59.3

any conservatives and further to the right than that, who get any pushback at all,

2:09.3

any is going to consequences, Twitter suspension or something. The word just seems to mean
