Hello, you know some plays stick in your head for odd reasons.

I remember laughing so loudly at Alan Aichborn's bedroom

fast that I was threatened with eviction by the theatre's usher. But Mike Lee's

Abigail's party remains particularly memorable because of the heated family arguments

it provoked.

While those around me on the family couch were doubled up with laughter, I can remember feeling

very uneasy, very uneasy about the play's underlying theme, the idea that the new lower

middle classes were greedy, pretentious and preoccupied with status.

Dennis Potts' review of the play perfectly captured my nagging unease, he wrote,

as so often in the minefields of English class consciousness more was revealed of the

snobbery of the observers rather than of the observed. Well an important new book
