When in his first term of office, Donald Trump began to impose sweeping tariffs, threatening

to spark a trade war, it was big news, though it shouldn't have been a big surprise.

His America First policy is not only a neo-Nazi dog whistle,

though because of its historical connection to American Nazi sympathizers, it certainly is that.

And before Nazi sympathizers and even outright Nazi foreign agents used the slogan,

it was used by the Ku Klux Klan.

And before even that, it was in use by the

No Nothing Party, a virulently anti-immigrant party that I've had many occasions to talk about

in the podcast. But America First has also come to represent an approach to foreign policy

emphasizing American nationalism and

non-interventionism. Part and parcel of foreign policy is foreign trade, and in this regard,

America First means protectionism, the restriction of imports for the purposes of bolstering domestic industries.
