Summary

New York Times best-selling author Tara Westover discusses her memoir, “Educated.” Tara describes what it was like growing up in the remote Idaho mountains as the daughter of survivalist Mormons. She explains her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when Tara’s older brother became violent. Tara did not attend school or see doctors, and had minimal interaction with the outside world for 17 years. Despite this unorthodox upbringing, Tara taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to earn acceptance into Brigham Young University. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her to Cambridge University, where she earned her Ph.D. in history. This coming-of-age story of courage serves as an inspiring reminder to anyone looking to find their own, unique voice. This conversation was recorded in front of an audience aboard the O Magazine Holland America Girls Getaway Cruise.

educated is liberating for so many people and I use the word liberation because I think

no matter what is going on in somebody's life now, you know, people call me and say I'm

1:17.5

going through this. I'm going to get educated. They go, well, I go just get the book educated.

1:22.6

It'll help you just get educated because I know that one of the reason why people are

1:28.3

responding to it is in a big way is because you showed so much of your own courage, so

1:33.9

much of your own vulnerability and strength to find your voice and to find a way out.

1:39.7

For me, the book is really I said to my producers is like in three parts. It's like living

in the shadow of life and on that mountain, then coming out of the shadows and then being

able to reject the shadow and the darkness of the past in order to embrace the light.

1:59.9

That's how I see it. It's an interesting way to put it. I think I would put it differently

2:06.3

but with the same kind of general thrust, I guess. I think for me, I think it was a little

2:13.1

bit about rejecting the past but it was also about trying to find the parts of the past

2:18.1

that were important to me that I wanted to hold on to and the good memories that I wanted
