The following is my mostly uncut interview with our producer Matt Frederick.

You might know him from stuff they don't want you to know,

or as the host of Monster, the Zodiac Killer.

He and I have worked together behind the scenes on a bunch of different things,

including this show, in which Matt has been involved since the

very beginning.

Fun fact, he also married Victoria and I.

And though we've had an uncountable number of conversations about all things ephemeral, we never

had occasion to record it before.

For the last episode of the season, Matt turned up this old family tape, a cassette his

grandfather recorded in the 1990s of older family recordings dating back as far as 1951.

It is incredibly rare to have home-recorded audio from that long ago.

The 1951 recording was on a dicta belt, one of many intermediary technologies between the invention of the wax cylinder and the proliferation of reel-to-reel tape.

It reminds me of a fruit roll-up, bright red, blue or purple, translucent vinyl plastic sleeves, like a cover for a cylinder recorder.
