Summary

Rapha presents Talking Luft! This week I’ve got Aussie former professional cyclist, and commentator Simon Gerrans on Talking Luft – brother to Andy Gerrans, Pro team Osteopath, who I had on the podcast last week talking about life as a staff member on a World Tour team. For those not familiar with Simon, he had a hugely successful 14 year career – winning stages in all 3 Grand Tours as well as wearing the Yellow Jersey at the Tour de France and taking out multiple one day classics such a Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo. Simon’s no stranger to the podcast, I had him on for an in-depth chat about his career way back in 2017, when he was in his 13th year pro. Head back and listen to that to hear more about Simon. But for now, we’re Talking Luft. We chat caps & where Luft originated from. We get into the serious stuff like shaving legs post retirement, old team kit, Gravel bikes, the atmosphere at Amstel Gold Race, cyclocross racers, Fassa Bortolo kit, a Vuelta war story, the epic 2006 Tour de France and so much more! Gerro’s so easy to chat to, and always has a great story to tell. I hope you love the listen as much as I did. Stay tuned next week for an episode dedicated to the art of breakaway – the Breakaway Theory with Taco Van der Hoorn, Steve Cummings, Ben Healy and Tim DeClercq. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. Yeah, so I was there in Monaco in June and he said look, the riders are really

0:26.9

looking at Avonosteo at the tour, would you be able to, you know, volunteer?

0:30.1

And I was effectively a backpacker at that point.

0:32.3

I said, yeah, I can travel around France for a month.

0:34.6

And it was pretty unique circumstances because you know the

0:38.2

hotels are obviously fully booked months in advance and you know to add an extra staff member in

0:42.9

at that point was quite complicated so you know there were days where you know I would come in

0:47.4

do some treatments maybe stay a night and then you know they didn't have somewhere for me to stay

0:51.9

for a couple of stages so I'd you know get on a bus and meet them three or four days later and come back in, and I was this kind of gypsy osteopath coming in and out of their, you know, green eges tour de France. Was it quite nice in a way? Because now you know how regimented the system is, you just got to pop in and out and then just be like away from the race for a few days. Yeah, it was really, it was really interesting at the time and yeah, um, yeah, I'm still

1:14.7

referred to by a couple

1:15.6

of staff members as a gypsy.

1:16.6

Yeah.

1:17.6

Yeah. Well, good-day, everyone. That, of course, was Andy Gerrins. Last week we had him on the

1:32.4

episode talking about the Road to the World Tour as a staff member. In his case, an osteopath.

1:38.7

You're probably wondering, how could you actually get onto the World Tour as a staff member?

1:42.5

Well, if you haven't heard that episode,

1:48.8

go back and listen to it because he's got an amazing story as well. And that name, Gherens,

1:54.2

yes, he is the brother of Simon Gerenz. And this is who we have on this week's Talking Loft.
