Summary

Rapha presents Talking Luft! I had Australian Mark O’Brien on the pod last week – ex-pro and now coach, giving all the insights on Strava and using it in training. As you would have heard he’s fantastic to chat to, so I thought it would be great to sit down with him to talk a bit of cycling lifestyle this week on Talking Luft. Over a cold Orval beer we chat all the good stuff – caps, beer, shaving your legs post career, wearing old pro kit vs. new wave kit, training loops around North Melbourne, beer v. wine, a war story of biting off more than you can chew in the Alps & much more.  This was a laugh, and I hope you enjoy the listen. Stay tuned next week as I take you on-race at the 4 day, Reef to Reef MTB stage race up in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. Until then.. cheers, Mitch Listen Listen & subscribe to this series on the Life in the Peloton website, at Spotify, Apple Podcasts, GooglePlay, Stitcher, Youtube or your favourite pod app.  Show Notes . . . I think now that you've got something like Strava, as you said, you're no longer a pro cyclist,

0:28.1

you don't have care of watching over every movement. And it's kind of, it almost keeps you

0:33.3

accountable, I think. Like if you're uploading a Strava, people get to say, oh, yeah, Mitch is

0:37.5

keeping fit or, like, you're out for a run. All of a sudden, in the back of your mind,

0:40.6

you're going, hang on, there's people follow me. I wonder, I don't really want to just, like,

0:43.7

dawdle around. You still have a bit of pride about you. You've been a pro for 10, 15 years or whatever it is like you still have a bit of stubbornness about you and want to show that

0:52.0

you're still a strong rider or strong runner when you're out for a run and I think this is

0:56.1

almost a thing to keep you accountable, keeps you linked up with your mates because someone will see it and might comment on it or go, that's a great loop. I'm going to go try that because Mitch went and wrote it. And it's almost a way of connecting with people and probably is a little bit like the Rafa clubhouse stuff that you've often spoken

1:11.5

about. It's almost like having a community no matter where you go that if you go overseas and

1:16.0

go ride your bike, you can link up with a local group, see where they leave from, see where they

1:19.9

go, meet new friends. There's a lot of social parts about it as well, not just the competitive

1:25.2

side of Strava.

1:43.2

Well, that's a little snippet from the last week's episode that I did talking about Strava.

1:46.0

I chatted with three guys to understand what is this thing, Strava, something that I've become very accustomed to now as a non-pro.

1:52.0

And I know everyone out there was listening to me going, yeah, we know about it, but I thought it was interesting to go and chat about it.

1:58.0

I spoke with Mark O'Brien who you just heard now, who is a guy who has

2:01.5

used Strava as a coach, as an athlete, and also as a guy riding to work. I spoke to Jay Vine

2:07.7

who's used it to become professional and a guy who's already been pro and has gone back and

2:12.6

rediscovered it as well, George Bennett. Those three angles, that's what we discover in last week's episode.

2:19.1

This week, I've got you Mark O'Brien to talk a bit of loft. And I love talking to Marco. He's a

2:24.3

guy that I've known throughout my whole cycling career and was great to talk to him. He's a fan

2:29.6

of the podcast, so he knew all the questions, but I wanted to hear his style tips as well, a guy who has
