Summary

As we’ve seen in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder, there is still so much work to be done around racial injustice. For white people, that’s often accompanied by confusion and uncertainty that can keep us stuck in a loop of discomfort and defensiveness. But if we want things to change, we need to be part of the conversation – even if that means risking our own comfort and challenging the status quo.

While books, documentaries and social media can be important catalysts for change on a large scale (and we have some to recommend below), one of the most impactful ways to learn and grow is through in-person conversations with real people in our lives.

In this special episode of The Mom Hour, Meagan talks to her niece Cecily and her nephew Mario about their experiences as young black people living in today’s world. The discussions are at times raw and may make you squirm, but we’re hoping they will also make you think, learn, and hopefully, continue the conversation in your own homes, families, and communities.

Hi everyone and welcome to the mom hour. I am Megan Francis and today we're

0:04.8

doing something a little different. As we've seen this week in the aftermath of the

0:09.4

George Floyd killings, there is so much racial injustice in the world.

0:12.8

And for white people, it's not always easy to know how to address it

0:16.5

or what to do about it.

0:18.2

Unfortunately, I think we often wind up stuck in a loop of defensiveness

0:22.0

and discomfort, and then we just shut down rather than listening to the people who have the most skin in the game

0:27.2

literally their skin black people themselves. So today we're featuring conversations I had with my niece

0:33.4

Cessley and my nephew Mario about their experiences as young black people in

0:37.8

today's world. So you might be thinking, well why are your niece and

0:41.0

nephew? Why not bring on an author or an expert here's our thinking

0:45.2

while books and documentaries and social media can be a great starting point and a place to learn

0:49.6

we know that in order to really change the world these conversations need to be happening in real life

0:53.6

with the real people in our lives. Those real authentic in-person conversations with

0:58.3

people we love are where empathy start and also where people feel free to be the most honest and raw and that's really

1:04.3

important. So what you're listening to is literally a conversation between an

1:08.8

aunt and her niece and an aunt and her nephew and because I've talked about

1:12.0

both Cecily and Mario on the

1:13.4

show over the years, maybe they felt a little bit like family to you too. I hope

1:17.7

that's even more true after you hear their words. Before I jump in with Cessley's

1:21.7

interview, I want to acknowledge there might be times that these conversations make you feel uncomfortable

1:26.2

They're definitely more political and raw than most of our content though we did still keep the interviews PG rated
