Summary

The bold and the bloody. This is a lecture I gave at The University of Auckland, as an "Introduction to Egyptian Warfare in the New Kingdom." It covers basic points: weapons, organisation, vehicles, battles and strategies, and also larger concepts like state violence and imperialism - how the Pharaohs approached warfare itself. Also, I explore some major events that we have already discussed (e.g. the Battle of Megiddo, the Capture of Joppa), and some still to come (The Battle of Kadesh). 400 years ago, a trio of tiny kingdoms were perched on some damp islands off the coast of Europe.

Within three short centuries, these islands would become the centre of an empire which ruled a quarter

of the globe and on which the sun never set. I'm Samuel Hume, a historian of the British Empire,

Okay, so hi, my name is Dominic and I'm going to give you a little bit of an introduction to

0:35.9

Egyptian warfare. I'm going to specifically focus on the late Bronze Age, which is the period

0:40.9

roughly 1550 to 1250 BCE. I could go into much greater detail about like earlier periods and

0:47.4

later, especially with the Hellenistic era, but I've only got 45 minutes, so I'm just going to

0:52.0

condense everything. This will be very much sort of like an overview, every one of the slides

0:57.6

that I'm about to show you could basically be a lecture in itself. So if you have any questions

1:02.3

at the end, I'll try to finish a little bit early, but feel free to ask anything. Otherwise,

1:06.7

we will dive in a little bit. So just the various basics with an unfinished slide, good start.

1:14.2

So here's Egypt very broadly. It's a country, northeast Africa, but as you can see, it sort of

1:20.0

borders on the eastern Mediterranean leading up into Canaan, Syria, Turkey, and the Middle East.

1:26.4

Egypt's geographic position has always been excellent for trading and also for warfare and conquest.

1:33.1

And from the very earliest parts of their history, they are going down south into what is now

1:37.6

Sudan and also going north and east into what is now Israel, Syria, that kind of region.

1:44.6

And generally causing havoc, stealing stuff and taking whatever they can.

1:50.1

So basically through this lecture, I'm going to go through some very basic overview points,

1:54.1

the rough history of what the era we're talking about, the weapons, the Egyptians liked to use
