The Bible is full of stories that strike modern readers as mythical or fantastical, sometimes

even genocidal or despicable.

But what bothers me most isn't the gotcha poll quotes about ending civilizations or raising

cities to the ground or even the simple textual inconsistencies in things like numbers

and timelines. What amazes me is how many seemingly

opposing worldviews can be drawn from what is called the Word of God. We're told that faith comes

by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, but the God of the Bible is so inconsistent that

he gives rise to countless sex and factions, each eventually collapsing

until we're all left with our own personal Jesus. Peace, war, prosperity, vows of poverty,

the text seems capable of justifying nearly any moral position. Cherry-picking scriptures

becomes not just temptingly unavoidable,

but completely necessary,

when these contradictions can't be reconciled with one another.

Readers are then left bouncing from passage to passage,

searching for both wisdom and validation,

forcing us to gaslight ourselves in search of some sort of coherence. And with the

Bible now spanning thousands of years and cultures and languages across the globe, it's almost as if

this flexibility isn't a flaw, but maybe an explanation for why this text, this specific

version of the Almighty, these ancient bits of poetry, are still memorized the
