Truly, whoever can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

That quote by Voltaire is often used by atheists to point out the dangers of religious dogma.

The idea is that if you set aside reason and logic when evaluating truth claims,

you'll be robbing yourself of that most important tool when it comes to deciding how to act.

More generally, we can say that if you set aside sound decision-making,

you run the risk of otherwise unwanted outcomes.

But as an atheist, I'm often told that not believing in God is the absurd position

and that some of the things that I do as a result of my non-belief,

including shows like this, are harmful or even atrocious. So if we both agree that

absurdities and atrocities are to be avoided, then it seems we have some basis for common ground here.

And common ground is a great place to begin a meaningful conversation. If you believe in a God

and want to have a meaningful conversation, then you are exactly the kind
