Welcome to what for us is Christmas Eve, but which, in reality, is the night before, the night before, the night before, the night before Christmas.

Come in, come in from the chilled, off your hats and coats, unwrap your Tom Baker-Huvian scarves,

shed your gloves, and pour some hot cider, mix you some hot cocoa, and settle down.

We have a lovely, warm evening planned.

Dickens had it right. Christmas is a time of ghosts, of fragments of the things that were,

melding with our hopes, our fears for what will be with the present and ever-changing moment when the future transforms through us into the past, that instant when what we will be

meets what we were. We're born into one family. Life, chance, and choice gives us other families.

At this one time of year, the time when we give to those we must and give of ourselves to those whom we choose,

we're made to look at those people whom we've gathered into our lives and are, for better or worse, comfortable with.

It's the time when our inner selves become both Santa and Crampus, and we gauge whether

or not we've been good boys and girls or naughty ones.
