This week finds us in the state of New York.

As the most densely populated corner of the United States, New York City, in particular, is home to a staggering number of terrifying tales

and urban legends, a surprising number of which come from underground. Many of them, I'm sure

you've heard before.

Man-eating alligators in the sewer, who started life as pets.

Giant killer super rats that ruled the streets after Hurricane Sandy.

Twisted and deformed mole people living in abandoned subway tunnels.

Personally, one of my favorite stops, if only for the feel of the place, is Governor's Island.

If you haven't been, it's a little island in New York Harbor covered in old military buildings

and fortifications, as well as many other historic buildings, some of which have been left to be

retaken by nature. But there's a deeper history that lurks beneath the surface of Governor's

island, too. A history of executions by both hanging and

firing squad, two abandoned cemeteries, and a mass grave. And yes, all of the bodies are still on the

island. Despite all that, or maybe because of it, it's the feel of the place that always gets to me.
