We continue south on our trip along the coast,

and we have a few more stops here in South Carolina

before setting foot into Georgia.

This evening, we will explore a legend.

In the tradition of legends,

some of this will be a matter of public record,

while other parts will be certainly an addition by American fancy.

In Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 19th century, resided one, Lavinia Fisher,

and her husband, John.

They operated the six-mile way far her house, an inn for those traveling through the area.

While serving as the proprietors of this inn, the local sheriff

would report that guests would disappear. Unfortunately, for the poor souls who would continue to

visit the way far her house, nothing came of those complaints. Legend claims that Lavinia

would serve a drug tea to her guests and then once retired to their room, either John, her husband,

would stab the guest, or Lavinia would activate a mechanism that would collapse the bed into a pit of spikes.

The Charleston Post and Courier reported that a posse of vigilantes went to the neighborhood in February 1819

to stop alleged gang activities
