Last week we covered Poe's biography, so this week, instead of repeating it, I'll share a bit of a story.

When I was in the ninth grade, my English teacher told the class that if we would memorize a poem and recite it before the class,

we would be rewarded with a generous piece of extra credit. As high schoolers do, most of the

clever kids had chose haikus, since there was no length requirement at all. In a rare moment of

overachievement, I chose Edgar Allan Poe's Annabel Lee.

I spent a few days reading and practicing the six stanzas, then perfectly executed the recitation

of Annabelle Lee and her tomb by the sounding C. Well received by the teacher in class,

I had my moment of pride for only moments, as another student followed my

recitation of Poe with another selection of Poe. What could possibly trump my effort? The Raven.

The Raven, in its entirety, recited perfectly all thousand-plus words, and he delivered it

with a theatrical flair that was completely absent from mine. So,
