Earlier, I was thinking about some of my own history with horror,

and realized that although I started where most of us Westerners did with Po.

In fact, there was a time in high school where an English teacher told us that we could choose any poem,

recite it from memory, and then receive extra credit.

These were the sort of assignments where one would choose a poem with a stanza, or two just to make the grade.

I've never considered myself an overachiever, but I chose Poe's The Raven, memorized it in its

entirety, and nailed the recitation. Best part of two decades later, I'd be lucky to make it

all the way through the third stanza. But after Poe, I had something a bit more modern. On the

weekends, generally, once my parents had gone to sleep,

there were two shows that I'd love to watch. First was Monster Vision hosted by Joe Bob Briggs

on TNT. Joe Bob seemed like a funny guy, and when they'd show their Monster the Week films,

as soon as the monster died, they'd roll credits. A bit later in the evening would be up all night with Rhonda on USA.

Frequently the show would have Gilbert Godfrey as a special guest.
