Today has been a difficult day. My dad has just died. He was a good man, good father. He had many varied interests, including art, photography and history, all of which he passed on to me.

In particular, it was history, which has ultimately resulted in this podcast.

I hope my listeners will indulge with me today, as this episode is not about the Cold War

it's a recording I made of a chat I had with my dad way before I had any thought of

cold war conversations or maybe this chat was the Genesis knows um but it would be it would be really nice

How old were you when you were called up?

Oh, about 18, 18, 19 a half, I think.

How were you informed?

Well, it's just through the post.

And what did the letter say?

Well, I can't remember the check words, but it told you that we were being called up

and where you had to report to.

Right.

And on what day and time, I presume?

Yeah.

Okay.

Yeah.
