If you travel out into the remote countryside of Cumbria, a county in northwest England, you may stumble upon a long winding path that stretches from Wazdale

head in, past Burnmore Tarn, before eventually dropping down into Eskdale past Boot Mill.

This path, known as the Eskdale Corpse Road, was once used to transport the dead from

Wazdale to Estdale, so they could be buried in the cemetery there.

It's earned a reputation as one of the more

well-known corpse roads of history and even has a famous ghost story associated with it. The story goes

that long, long ago, a young man living in Wasdale died. His body was to be taken to Eskdale by horse

via the corpse road. It was a cold misty winter's day when the funeral march happened.

Mid-transport, the horse carrying the young man's body became spooked and bolted away, taking the

young man's body with it. The party of mourners searched and searched, but they couldn't find the

horse or the body. Now you can imagine how inconsolable the already grieving mother of the young man

became. So much so that perhaps his death and the tragic events that followed led to her sudden

death. Some say she even returned home the day of her son's funeral procession and collapsed and died
