0:04.1	I'm Alex. Back in 2016, Chris Harlan,
0:07.8	done away was between two worlds.
0:10.0	Well, I just finished my first year in journalism school.
0:12.9	And I had been a semi pro bike racer for six years.
0:18.3	Chris was in his mid 20s.
0:20.1	He was thinking more seriously about his career in journalism,
0:23.2	but he also wasn't quite ready to give up on bike racing.
0:26.1	I had always dreamt of racing my bike in Europe,
0:28.8	because that's the heartland.
0:30.7	And I decided, well, this is my opportunity.
0:34.1	So in the middle of grad school, Chris made a go of it.
0:37.7	He flew to Belgium and got a little apartment and began testing himself against
0:41.9	the elite riders in a place where bicycle racing is a really big deal.
0:46.2	It's full of traditions and idiosyncrasies like the Rodaniacar that drives
0:50.4	ahead of Belgium bike races, blaring an ad for Rodaniac watches.
0:54.2	It's the ice cream truck of Belgium.
0:57.3	Everyone hears that that call and they hear the Rodaniacar and they know
1:02.4	there's a bike race happening just out there front door.
1:05.7	And so they gather along the sides with their paper cones of fries and beer
1:10.9	and watch the racing.
1:12.6	So there's Chris doing this thing.
