Syria is getting a new regime, but not a new economy. From Marketplace, I'm Sabri Benashore, in for David Brancaccio.

The Assad family ruled Syria for more than half a century, and that dynasty has come to an end.

Deposed President Bashar al-Assad has fled to Russia, reportedly stunned by the poor

performance of his army.

The rebel group Hayatahrit al-Chem, or

HTS, is consolidating control. It will inherit an economy devastated by a decade of brutal

civil war that cost half a million lives. The BBC's Katie Silver has more.

According to official statistics, it says that Syria's gross domestic product or GDP shrank by about 54% between 2010 and 2021.

Basically, people there aren't consuming and investors with a volatile security situation just haven't been investing.

It's also meant significant amounts of poverty, about 70% of the population predicted really

to be in poverty.

It's about 14.5 million Syrians.

Now, some of the challenges going forward are the ongoing sanctions, exactly how they're

going to be able to afford enough oil to fuel the economy, as well as getting private sector

investors back on board.

Some analysts predicting that it could take about a decade to recover

and get back to the levels of economic growth that we saw back in 2011.
