In the wake of the collapse of the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, American and Israeli warplanes recently conducted

airstrikes against targets in Syria. Specifically, they went after existing military infrastructure,

as well as influential Islamist groups there. The tactical strategy was not mere opportunism.

Rather, the aim was to ensure that whoever does come to power in Syria now

does not get their hands on the stockpiles of advanced weapons that were built up by Assad's regime.

Also, with the Syrian government now down and abandoned by their Russian protectors,

Washington and Jerusalem were presented this opportunity without fear of conflict with Moscow.
