my boyfriend and I have had this constant debate about the difference between

sympathy and empathy. I have taken a few communications classes in college and between educational videos and

textbooks, there always seem to be differences about the definitions of sympathy and

empathy. I'm curious to see what you guys see as the

definitions of sympathy and empathy. End of question. Yeah, I've seen this before.

When I was young growing up in the 70s and 80s,

sympathy meant to have caring feelings towards other people.

As in, I have sympathy for those who struggle with poverty.

Or when you are feeling sick, I have sympathy for you.

When we look up the definition, there are two main definitions of the word sympathy.

Number one is feelings of pity or sorrow for someone else's misfortune.

As in they had great sympathy for the flood victims.

this usage is indifference. So you have sympathy on one end and indifference on the other end. So sympathy is a good thing.
