But right now, let's talk a little NFL draft.

0:01.8

Let's talk some Cowboys, and let's go live to the Diamond Factory Ticket hotline and say hello to one of our favorite football minds and one of our football friends. It is the great Nate Tice of Yahoo Sports and NFL Network. Hey, Nate. Hey, how you doing? I think the last time I saw you guys, I was exhausted at the airport in Indianapolis. No, no, that was in the Super Bowl, wasn't it? San Francisco.

0:21.9

It's San Fran.

0:22.8

Yeah, no.

0:23.2

Great to see you guys.

0:24.0

Great to talk you guys.

0:24.8

Yeah. at the airport in Indianapolis. No, no, that was in a Super Bowl, wasn't it? Yeah, San Francisco.

0:21.8

It's San Fran. Yeah, no, great to see you guys. Good to talk you guys. Dude, I'm sure that you were now just able to catch your breath because you were working so hard on all this draft stuff and even after. Are you able to just like, you know, recalibrate over the last few days? Well, I'm a psychotic. So I decided to look

0:39.3

ahead at the 2027 class and write 3,000 words on them. So I did a top 25 already on that. So,

0:46.4

but now I'm unplugging like Neo and the Matrix when he gets out of the goop. Well, we love your

0:51.9

football 301 podcast. It's an awesome discussion. And we love the way you look at the sport. And obviously you've done a bunch of draft recap stuff, but we kind of want to focus on the Cowboys. And it felt like everything broke right on night one for Caleb Downs to slide down to 11 as the Cowboys trade up. I'm just curious your take on guys like him,

1:12.3

maybe Kyle Hamilton. Why do these safeties who are so freaking good slide this far?

1:18.4

It's just more of a findable position, you know, guys that, you know, outside corners of the

1:23.8

defensive backroom is probably the hardest one to find because it's a specific skill set. It's kind of just, you know, it's a tough position. You have to have a certain athleticism, a certain size, a certain mindset. And if you fail at corner, all right, let's try you at safety. You know, so there's just the denominator thing. There's just more bodies that are available at that position. And also is there some stylistic preferences.

1:45.5

So you can find more bodies that's position.

1:47.7

You can also just find these guys to work in my scheme and make them work in my scheme

1:53.1

as opposed to a guy that's just truly scheme proof.

1:56.1

You know, some other positions that it's a little bit.

1:57.7

So there's some comparisons to like an offensive guard.

2:00.3

You know, like, oh, okay, he's not a really good tackle. All right, kick him inside the guard. You know, that's kind of so you can find a few more guards. But I think that's why they maybe get devalued. And you know, and even during this process, Downs is not exactly like Hamilton, not only just in the body sense, you know, Hamilton is built like a pterodactal, while Downs is built, it's more like a traditional safety, and is that Hamilton plays a ton in the slot. And I think with Downs is more what I call centrally located. He's great from the box. He's great as a rover, you know, in front of the safeties. That's how they used him at Ohio State a ton, Great on the back end, rotating down. And that's how I picture Christian Parker using him as more just that kind of deep safety that rotates down into the box or rotates to the strength of the play call. Maybe we'll play in the slot a little bit just to use some versatility as well. So I think that's more just what it is. It's more of a findable position. And honestly, when I was looking at some of the highly drafted safeties in the past, you know, 15 years I think I looked at, you know, since the new CBA, a guy that really compares the downs that maybe not exactly body type but play style type is Minka Fitzpatrick. Super smart, super heady, always around the ball, kind of the general of the defense. He's kind of tapered off a few in the last few years, but for a few years, Mika Fitzpatrick was maybe the best safety in the game. And he wasn't always in the slot. He was from a back end position or rotating down. So that's how I envision downs in this defense. But God,

3:24.1

he's a heck of a player. And I think the Cowboys down at the exact perfect spot. And guess

3:28.0

we're making Fitzpatrick got drafted. Number 11 overall. So it fits very perfectly with where
