The final obstacle to Sweden's bid to join NATO has been cleared after Hungary's parliament voted to accept its membership.

Sweden will now become the organisation's 32nd member after its neighbour Finland joined

last year in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Christishan called it a historic day and said his country stood

ready to shoulder its security responsibilities.

The NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Sweden's accession would help the alliance

face the growing threat from Russia.

It makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and all of us more succor.

It also demonstrates that NATO's door is open, that President Putin did not succeed in his attempt to close

NATO store.
