Summary

Delicate ears beware - Lachlan Markay and Asawin Suebsaeng got explicit with us to talk about the inner workings of the Trump administration staff, which is the topic of their new book called Sinking in the Swamp. How much favor do Trump-positive talking heads really get from the White House? Are Trump’s numerous ex-staffers now effectively lobbyists? And can we pronounce Asawin’s name correctly? Show Notes: -Buy Sinking in the Swamp! -Tito Puente -Bannon’s use of the “Island of Misfit Toys” phrase -Stephen Miller’s strange history -The “Singularity of Asininity” -James Adomian’s Gorka impression -Lachlan’s article on Gorka’s park-job -GetBlueVine.com/dingo

Greetings, dear listeners. This is Jonah Goldberg host of the Remnant Podcast.

0:29.0

This week's episode is brought to you by Bluevine. We'll hear more about them in a little bit.

0:35.0

But before we get to today's topic, first of all, I want to say thank you to everybody who has subscribed since the new regime has come in on Monday with the pay for membership stuff and all the rest.

0:47.0

The initial numbers are great. If we had told even our investors that we would be revenue positive with, at this point in this startup cycle, they would have laughed at us, but we are actually casual positive right now and have been, except for one brief dip when we made the mistake of hiring David French.

1:07.0

So thank you to everybody who supports the dispatch. It means so much to us and it's going to be an uphill struggle. But we think if you have you guys along for the ride, we'll make it.

1:20.0

All of that said, I also want to warn listeners, I don't know that we can avoid the explicit raining rating on today's podcast, nor do I think we can avoid speaking ill of Donald Trump.

1:35.0

And I know these two things annoy some listeners. So if you're, if you're put off by body, raucous, blue language, which while try to keep to a minimum, but I just, I know these people and I can't make any promises.

1:52.0

Maybe you should skip this one. Definitely shouldn't play with kids in the car. And if you think that I am often way too anti-Trump and that I can't move away from it, this is probably a good one to skip too.

2:06.0

All right, with those disclosures, I'm very excited to have two riders that I think are a force for good in the world and their writing and maybe not in every other aspect of their lives.

2:19.0

We have Lockland, Marquay, who I only learned very recently is not Marquay. And I'm going to struggle with this, but I'm going to do it anyway.

2:29.0

What's the one? What's bang? How do you do it? Sub sang. Sub sang. It's very tight. Break it down into the syllables for me.

2:36.0

Ah, so when last name, Sub sang. Okay. And just call me Swin. Yeah, and everyone calls you Swin. So that's what I'm going to do, but I felt it was my journalistic obligation to try. Thank you so much.

2:50.0

Okay, so you guys have written, you guys are both at the Daily Beast. You're a little bit country. You're a little bit rock and roll or maybe see other way around or you're a bird.

2:58.0

I can't keep these things straight, but you're men of the left in the broad brushstrokes.

3:05.0

I think if you really drilled me down on the technicalities, I'd be a social Democrat. Okay. And, and Lockland, you come from more or less my tribe of conservative leaning libertarian, but somewhat disillusioned in cutting yourself a lot lately. That's fair. Okay.

3:23.0

So you guys wrote sinking in the swamp. How Trump's minions and misfits poisoned Washington. I'm going to have one criticism up front, which I think is entirely valid, and I will defend it all fronts.

3:38.0

And I have to admit, I was flatly shocked by this. There's no index. And not the first time we've heard this.

3:49.0

And a book like this where all you're doing is holding paper against various personalities. And in a town like this where most people,

3:59.0

the first thing to do is look up themselves in the index. Not to have an index seems to me a bit of malpractice, but now they can just go into Google Books and dump in their name.

4:09.0

Yeah, it's easier than ever to find your name if you want to, but I will say that one of the funnier reactions we've had to the book was, was actually Swin who was speaking to a fairly senior Trump official who was complaining that he wasn't given a chance to comment or an advanced look at some of the stuff in the book.

4:26.0

And Swin explained that, well, everyone who's mentioned in the book about whom there's new reporting was contacted beforehand, you're not in the book. So we didn't call you. And then I probably remember the stories that was recounted correctly.

4:37.0

There was sort of a pause for a few seconds and he goes, what the hell do you mean? I'm not in the book. Am I not important enough? So it, yes, it does inspire some frustration, but not always for the reasons you'd imagine.
