Today I want to talk about an article that is already heavily quoted and will be quoted

for quite some time and that is the surviving sepsis campaign.

Now this appeared in critical care of medicine back in January of this year and this is the

revision of the initial guidelines that were published back in 2004.

This is a large multinational cooperative to try to identify what are the currently best practices in management of the

septic patient.

And based on evidence that we have currently in the literature, there are numerous authors

on this paper and numerous organizations to give you a sense of some of the cooperating

organizations includes the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American College of Chess

Physicians, American College of Emergency Physicians, Canadian Critical Care Society, European

Society, Clinical Microbiology, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, European Society, Clinical Microbiology,

European Society of Intensive Care Medicine,

Society of Critical Care of Medicine,

and the list goes on and on.

And what this document is is really attempt

to develop a consensus of what is the best method

of managing the patient in the intensive care unit suffering from

sepsis or septic shock.

We have in previous podcast talked about some of the basic science of sepsis and septic shock,

and the reality is that sepsis is a very significant killer and cause of organ failure and organ dysfunction

in the intensive care unit.
