Summary
Shark attacks on humans are rare, but they are slowly on the rise in Australia where all our guests are from. In this episode, they share the terrifying moment when they realised they were under attack. For Brett Connellan in New South Wales, it was an encounter with a Great White. “Out of nowhere I get hit with this immense force from my right side and this force was so strong it threw me off my surf board,” he says. “I landed in the water and before I could even look around and figure out what had happened I look down and see this shark biting into my right leg. This for me is that distinct moment when time just stops.” Brett is joined by fellow survivors Justine Barwick and Dave Pearson. Together the share their stories and discuss life, death and why they ultimately feel lucky. This episode of The Documentary, comes to you from BBC OS Conversations, bringing together people from around the world to discuss how major news stories are affecting their lives.

| 1:08.9 | Give my neighbour a call and said, come on, I'm heading out the beach. |
| 1:11.5 | I want to lift. So I took him down and me, him and my dog turned up at the beach. There was one young guy already out there, a friend of ours called Nottie, and another guy, Sean, turned up while we were there. So the three of us paddled out together. I'd only been in the water, probably not even 10 minutes. and this is where a lot of fortunate things happen for me. |

| 1:33.3 | were. And the shark came from just off to the right hand side from the front of the board. And as it came |
| 1:39.2 | up, its bottom jaw hit the surfboard. I guess its teeth become stuck into the board. And as the shark flipped out of the water, because I was paddling, my left arm had gone forward. And as its top jaw came down, it trapped my right arm between the surfboard and its top teeth. And because it was flying out of the water, it then took me down to the bottom with it. And as its teeth ran across |

| 2:07.8 | But fortunately, it actually hit me in the head on the way through. So I was semi-conscious for most |
