0:35.6	a country that 30 years ago declared
0:38.0	independence at the dissolution of the Soviet Union and has since made its Western aspirations
0:42.8	clear. It signed an association agreement with the EU in 2014 declaring its intention
0:48.4	to apply for membership of the bloc in 2024. However, its unambiguous Western trajectory has not made life easy for one of Europe's
0:56.1	largest countries. Ukraine has fallen victim to extensive interference by Russia, including
1:00.8	Moscow's support of separatist groups in conflicts in the east of the country and its 2014 annexation
1:06.8	of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula. With the primacy of the rule of law being considered a central pillar of the European Union,
1:13.6	Ukraine has been keen to promote and support it.
1:15.6	So what is the state of the rule of law in Ukraine?
1:18.6	What are the challenges it faces and how can the EU best support its valued eastern neighbour towards this end?
1:24.6	To shed some light on these issues, I'm going to be speaking to Brian Mefford,
