Day. Happy, happy MLK Junior Day.

What was it like in your house growing up?

You know, it was a big deal.

My dad and my mother, they were both social justice advocates they were activists as well I mean you

imagine an interracial couple getting married a year after the loving decision

came down so I think in a sense they felt that they owed the movement.

And my father would often say,

why are we celebrating President's Day?

Why are we celebrating Washington's birthday when he owned slaves?

Like they were very politically astute.

And formative for you.

And very informative for me.

People that know me.

And he would play Stevie Wonder's record album songs in the Key of Life that

had the happy birth that has really become the happy birthday song for black people right like that's what we sing during

birthday parties and he was like listen to this you see there ought to be a day and

he would like sort of sing it along and when MOK finally got his day and he got his due

I mean my father's company did not give that day off, but he took it off as a personal day.

And I recall a time when I was working, when even though it's supposed to be a federal holiday,

some places that I worked did not observe it.
