Hey there, welcome into the Sunday edition of CNN Five Things.

I'm David Rind.

The other day, my landlord told me in the other tenants in our building

to clean up our apartments.

Before I could get all defensive and tell him that my wife and I obviously keep

our spotless all the time, he told us why.

Long story short, he said interest rates aren't going to get better than this anytime soon, so it's

time to refinance the building's mortgage a few

days later an appraiser came by to take photos of our apartments and I'm telling

you this pretty mundane story because it turns out that sense of urgency

around interest rates that my landlord is feeling, a lot of people

around the country are feeling it too. Let's spend five minutes with CNN's Vanessa

Yurkavich to find out why she covers business and the economy for us. Before we go any further, Vanessa,

can you give me an Econ 101 explainer on interest rates? Like, what are we talking about here?

All right, Econ 101. Yeah. So if you want to borrow money for anything like a mortgage, a car, college, you'll

be taking out a loan and on those loans there's an interest rate so it's basically the price

you pay to borrow money and as interest rates rise the price you pay on that loan goes up.
