Summary

Tons of great questions from our listeners: LeBron’s extension, the playoff series that most changed our opinions on a player, why handshake deals for future legal contracts are considered cap circumvention, the effect of the Ben Simmons settlement, what would surprise “casuals” the most about the day-to-day life in a front office, should we have a max salary, and more.

All right, a languid offseason was interrupted slightly with the news that LeBron James

0:06.3

has signed a one plus one extension for the max with the Los Angeles Lakers.

0:12.4

He could have been a free agent next summer.

0:14.7

That is now no longer the case.

0:16.5

He's now lined up in 2024 with his son potentially being in the draft.

0:22.3

So what we're going to do, we'll talk about that a little bit.

And then we've got a chance to get into, I think we're actually even going to do two weeks in a row,

interesting point on twitter yesterday when you said that this extension was timed so that he cannot be traded this year.

0:56.4

If he had signed earlier, then he would have been trade eligible just before the trade deadline.

1:02.7

But because it's six months after he signs it, now it pushes just past the trade deadline,

1:09.6

which will be Feb 9 this year.

1:11.6

And so LeBron James can't be traded this entire season.

1:15.5

I think that is actually somewhat interesting because the situation that the Lakers are in now,

1:21.6

look, he has an out in 2024.

1:23.7

He's probably going to try to sign with whatever team drafts his son.

1:28.5

That team will probably not be the Lakers, given that they owe their first round pick to New Orleans that year, even if it ends up being a high pick.

1:36.5

Do the Lakers end up in a position where if they're bad this year, they basically have to trade LeBron James?

1:41.9

Yeah, he does have a 15% trade bonus.

1:44.8

Which will be irrelevant because he's over the max.
