Summary

We’re into a third year of this pandemic and the UK is reporting record numbers of Covid cases. How worried should we be and what do we still not know? Adam hears from the BBC's health editor, Hugh Pym, and the World Health Organization’s Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, who says there’s hope yet for a healthier 2022. Meanwhile, with a decision imminent on whether Virginia Giuffre’s US lawsuit against Prince Andrew will be allowed to continue, what does this ruling mean for the Duke? And Newscast is back with a boss. Lord Alan Sugar is on to tell us about how well British businesses have dealt with Covid, the latest series of The Apprentice, and the death of the Blackberry phone. Today’s Newscast was made by Daniel Wittenberg with Georgia Coan and Rachel Judah. The studio director was Emma Crowe and the assistant editor was Alison Gee. The editor is Jonathan Aspinwall.

Hello, hope you had a nice festive break. Mine was, hmm, a bit mixed like everyone's

So should we get all caught up on a new edition of newscast? And stay tuned right to the

of The Apprentice. Newscast, newscast from The Baby Say, that will take some time before

we figure out what our new normal is. Now if that is the argument then we are going

into unprecedented territory. Combined with contract tasting, contact tasting,

Let's make slow please. Blah, blah, blah. Lose, lose, lose. Hello, it's Adam in the studio,

gladly back in the studio. And it's you in new broadcasting house, happy new year.

1:03.1

Happy new year. Haha, very good. Very good. How was your break?

1:07.6

It was pretty good. We were sort of on tentahooks for a possible press conference, weren't we

1:11.9

last week and each day that would seem to be looming. Then of course it was ruled out

1:17.0

and you never quite knew what was going to be said or happened. So I'm not quite as relaxing

1:21.4

as it could have been, but I'm not complaining. You had to hold off the Sherry till about

1:25.4

730 just to be sure of something like that. You mentioned press conferences though. We're

1:29.5

recording this inaugural episode of newscast in 2022 and we've just had a dining street

news conference. Hughes prayers have finally been answered. It was Boris Johnson, it was

Sir Patrick Valens and Sir Chris Whitty newly knighted. It wasn't exactly clear here what

1:46.0

this press conference was kind of for. There wasn't any huge, huge announcements, although

1:49.7

there were a few that will go through. It seemed to be sort of tied to this milestone
