About the speaker: Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel is a member of the St. Cecilia Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Nashville, Tennessee. She received her Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy. She has been active in her religious community's teaching apostolate for over fifteen years and has assisted with the theological formation of the newest members of her religious congregation. In addition to contributing articles to a number of journals and magazines, including the Vatican newspaper (L'Osservatore Romano), The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, The Linacre Quarterly, and the Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings, Sister has served as editor-in-chief of her Congregation's book, Praying as a Family (also available in Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic versions). With EWTN, she directed a television series of the same title. She has also served as the creator and founding Director of the University of Dallas Studies in Catholic Faith & Culture Program.

So we're looking at basically suffering through a series of stories, because I think that's one of the things with theology is that we can find the truth.

So what theology actually does is actually abstracts truths that we live on a practical level.

And so sometimes when the truth becomes, in a sense, too obscure,

when the abstract concept becomes too obscure, you know, suffering unites us to Christ.

Okay, that's really abstract, right?

But when you hear it in the concrete through a particular story, it makes a whole lot more sense.

So what I'm doing tonight with this talk is it's actually divided into two different sections.

So the first section is going to look pretty fast.

And so that's all about what we're all looking for, which is happiness.

So that's what we're going to look pretty fast pace.

And then we're going to shift into suffering.

And then I'll tell you also why I chose to present in this way.

So we're going to dive it in with, I'm sure you've read this. You might want to read it because it's absolutely fantastic.

which is Thomas Aquinas is what's called his treatise on happiness.

So it's in the first part of the second part of the summa. Questions 1 through 17, the Treaties on Happiness.
