Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, describes a sudden, unexplained death in an infant

under one years of age.

Other causes, for example, infections must be excluded before a diagnosis is made.

It's sometimes referred to as cot death.

It most often occurs in the first six months of life.

Let's talk about the risk factors.

The risk factors for SIDS include prematurity, a low birth weight, smoking during pregnancy, male babies who have only a slightly

increased risk compared to female babies, and younger maternal age, for example,

under 20 years of age.

Breastfeeding is protective against SIDS.

Let's talk about minimizing the risk.

Measures that can be used to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome include having

the baby in their own sleeping space with a firm flat mattress, sleeping on their back or supine,

keeping their head uncovered, placing their feet at the foot of the bed to prevent them from

sliding down and under the blanket, keeping the cot clear of toys and loose blankets, avoiding

overheating and not overdressing the baby, maintaining a comfortable room temperature and
