0:26.3 | Subconjunctival hemorrhages are a relatively common condition where one of the small blood |
0:31.0 | vessels within the conjunctiva ruptures and releases blood into the space between the sclure |
0:36.9 | and the conjunctiva. |
0:38.8 | These hemorrhages often appear after episodes of strenuous activity, |
0:42.3 | like heavy coughing, weightlifting or straining when constipated. |
0:47.1 | It can also be caused by trauma to the eye. |
0:49.9 | So let's start early with a quick tom tip. |
0:52.1 | Most cases of some conjunctival hemorrhage are |
0:54.8 | idiopathic, meaning that they come on without a clear underlying cause and the patient |
0:59.8 | is otherwise healthy. However, there's a number of conditions that may predispose them to developing |
1:05.4 | a subconjunctival hemorrhage. So when a patient turns up with a subconjunctival hemorrhage, |
1:10.7 | use it as a clue to think about |
1:12.7 | other conditions that may have caused the subconjunctival hemorrhage, or at least contributed to it. |
1:18.7 | And these are things like hypertension, so it's worth checking their blood pressure. |
1:23.1 | Bleeding disorders, for example, thrombocytopenia or a low platelet count. |
1:28.0 | Whooping cough or potassium infection can cause such severe coughing that they develop. |
1:34.0 | Medications like warfarin, doax or anti-platelet medications like aspirin or clipidigril, |
