Subconjunctival hemorrhage occurs when a small blood vessel within the conjunctiva ruptures,

releasing blood into the space between the sclera and the conjunctiva.

They often occur after episodes of strenuous activity, such as heavy coughing, weightlifting,

or straining when constipated. They can also be caused by trauma to the eye. A tom tip for you,

most cases of subconjunctival hemorrhage are idiopathic in otherwise healthy patients. However, several

factors may predispose to the condition and are worth assessing, such as hypertension,

bleeding disorders, for example thrombocytopenia or a low platelet count, whooping cough,

medications, for example anti-platelet drugs,

DOACs or warfarin, and non-accidental injury where there's safeguarding problems.

Let's talk about the presentation.

A subconjunctival hemorrhage appears as a patch of bright red blood underneath the conjunctiva.

It covers the white of the eye.

It's painless and it does not affect vision.

There may be a precipitating event such as heavy coughing or heavy weightlifting.
