Storytellers known and loved by millions.

To introduce tonight's great story, here's the director of Studio One.

Fletcher Michael, the name of the late renowned Booth Tarkington,

usually brings to mind simple, plain American stories about young people like

Penrod and Sam, gentle Julia, Clarence and Alice Adams.

Stories of small towns and their citizens, teenagers large and small and their problems.

It seems unlikely then that Mr. Tarkington once turned from the recognizable American

simplicity of his best known stories to a dark melodrama of revenge and passion

set in the smoking background of Paris during the French Revolution.

But this he did.
