I am Andrea Aswajé.

And I'm Yasminamer.

So Andrea, before I was fortunate enough to tell these types of stories, some of my first journalism

assignments ever were actually about war, specifically Syria.

I talked to people on the ground there to try to get a picture of what was happening and I remember so many of the details being just harrowing

Yeah, this is a war that's lasted way longer than anyone anticipated and it's displaced almost six

million Syrians throughout it. Yeah and each one of those Syrians has a story.

I spoke to one man who shared his with us.

37 year old Hassan al-Kuntar is from a Syrian city called Sueda.

He grew up with two siblings in a tight-knit middle-class family.

Dad was an engineer, mom was a nurse.

We have a lot of cousins, big family, huge.

But it's been more than a decade since Hassan has seen his family.

Now he just has fond memories of their time together.

I used to go to farm with my father every weekend. A small farm with some olive trees and small house

with no electricity, but there when he teach me the value of the nature, how to not forget my roots.

In 2006, Hassan traveled to a wealthier state, the United Arab Emirates, or UAE, hoping to give his family greater financial security.

But in 2011 everything changed.
