A Vibrislap is an excellently named percussion instrument that involves a wooden ball

suspended above a wood block by a metal tension bar.

It makes a terrific sound kind of like a mega rattlesnake, which I mean vipar slap it's a pretty accurate name.

On this episode it's time for another edition of strong covers.

This time we're talking about a pair of cover recordings that, while great on their own,

also give a new understanding of an appreciation for the original.

I'm excited to dig in so let's clip on the capo, tune down the strat and get to it. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Cover songs have long been a good way to get a sense of a given musician or a given band, seeing what they do with

someone else's song is a great way to understand the qualities that make them distinct as

artists. On the flip side, a cover recording can also give an interesting new perspective on the original song, and in some cases, a cover's most essential function is to remind listeners of what a great song it was to begin with. Some covers make subtle

changes, some covers are less subtle, but they're always instructive in some way.

So I've always liked talking about strong covers on Strong Songs and it's time to do it again

with Strong Covers Volume 3.

The first volume of Strong Covers recorded several years ago now took on a number of the most

well-known and transformative covers around from Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's

Hallelujah to Aretha Franklin's cover of Otis

Redding's Respect.
