Roundtable: Are You Living Paycheck to Paycheck?

A bucket-list trip. A new house. A different car. The latest smartphone. All great things, but they require money. Many of us have gotten used to living paycheck to paycheck and putting things on credit cards. Is there a better way to spend and save without going into debt or eating mac and cheese until we’re 40? Our guests reveal what they’re saving money for, how they’re doing it, and why delayed gratification and planning for the future can be rewarding. If you’re needing clarity on how to better save towards a long-term goal, you’ll be inspired by our discussion.

Culture: Am I Behind in Life?

Your friend gets a promotion. Another friend starts dating. A couple in your small group is expecting their first child. Meanwhile, you’re underemployed and staring at another apartment’s popcorn ceiling. This was Meghan Asbury’s life. Every milestone her friends hit left her feeling more and more behind. She moved to a new city for a fresh start, but that didn’t help. The months and years following led to a fair amount of grieving, soul-searching, and reevaluating her situation. In the process she learned a lot about herself, God, His plans for us, and what it means to be “on track.”

This is Lisa Anderson here with you and a little preview of what is coming up later on in the show. For our inbox,

one of our listeners wants to know, how do you engage with a loved one who is questioning

0:27.4

their beliefs about God? Well, one of our counselors, Glenn Lutchins, is going to answer that.

And then for our culture segment, Megan Asbury is the author of You Are Not Behind.

0:39.3

That is a book. And I hope everyone is encouraged just by the title because don't all of us feel

0:45.1

behind at one point or another in one area of our lives or another. So she's going to give

0:51.2

us encouragement for what it looks like to be content with where

0:56.0

you are, but also to go for stretching experiences in the meantime. So a great conversation with

1:01.4

her. All right, here we are for our roundtable. And I have got some friends here at the table to

1:06.5

talk about money, specifically saving. So we have Dakota, Georgia, and Casey here. Hi, guys.

1:13.3

Hey, hey. Hey, hey. All right. So the idea for this conversation came about. I was actually

1:21.8

talking to a couple of people about vacations. And they basically had just taken these big vacations and put them on their

1:28.5

credit cards. And so it was very like dicey their ability to pay kind of the the things that

1:36.4

were coming up, the expenses related to the vacation and stuff. And I just like, not that I'm just

1:42.5

a multimillionaire, but that was just curious to me because I've

1:45.3

usually been in the position of like, I'm going to save for a vacation or I have done X, Y, Z. And so,

1:52.5

oh, okay, well, now I can do this vacation. And it just got me thinking, are there a lot of people out there?

1:58.2

You know, we hear the term like living paycheck to paycheck or what it

2:01.2

looks like to be more in a struggling season of your life financially or maybe you've made a big

2:05.9

expense for something and now you're like having to pair back. But I think it'd be fascinating

2:12.2

to talk about the psychology around saving and spending. Why we do what we do, are we frustrated with where
