Whether they remember it or not, all West Coast Marines have likely trained on Camp Horno at some point.

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is a massive installation, so it's divided up into smaller camps,

with long stretches of Desert Road connecting them all together. Camp Horno is just a small

crop of barracks, command buildings, and an often used pool. On the south side of it is a range

of steep hills that we all became very familiar with

during Marine Combat Training, SOI, Basic Recon, any patrolling exercises that we did.

It was called the Alpha Shelf, up one steep dirt trail called the microwave,

across the shelf, then down another steep trail called the ankle breaker.

The terrain alone is enough to make your

life miserable. Steep hills, loose rock, thick brush, poison oak, rattlesnakes, just walking through

the desert and you put your leg through a patch of paddle cactus. And at night, it's worse.

The fog rolls in off the coast and just sits there, low and heavy.

Sometimes you can't see more than a few feet in front of you. It's the kind of place where your senses start to play tricks on you, especially when you're very tired.

Shapes move that shouldn't. Sounds carry in ways that don't make sense.

And after enough time out there, your brain starts to try to fill in the gaps.

Most of the time there's a reason for it.

Wildlife, fatigue, your eyes adjusting to your night vision optics, all of that.

But every now and then, something happens that doesn't quite fit into any of those boxes.

And if you talk to enough people, you start to hear the same kinds of stories.

Different Marines, different units, same place, same feeling.

Like something's out there watching you.

Not moving.
